Cuxhaven, Northern Germany, where Elbe meets the North Sea

Many tourists think that there isn't much in North Germany besides Hamburg and Bremen.  If you are willing to spend more time in the area you will discover plenty that will leave you speechless in this part of Lower Saxony.

Cuxhaven is a small town, where the Elbe River (which flows from Czech mountains) meets the end of its journey, the North Sea.  The wind is often strong here, and the sea can be dangerously rough.  One of the most amazing sights of Cuxhaven is the Kugelbake, a wooden lighthouse that had been guiding sailors at this junction of Elbe River and North Sea for 300 years. Built far out on a sand bank with wind as strong as steroids, it has got to be one of the most bizarre man-made structures I have ever seen.

Not surprisingly there aren't many hotels in Cuxhaven. I stayed at the Best Western which also has an excellent family-run restaurant, where they source only local ingredients and bake their own bread.  After a day battling the wind, it was time to sit down by the window table and watch the night fall while the chef at the open kitchen serves up their daily catch.

Cuxhaven is 100km north of Bremen, which translates to a good hour's drive on scenic national road.   The Best Western is 10 minutes' drive from Kugelbake; park you car at the designated parking and walk the rest of the way out to this landmark that sits at the northern-most point of Lower Saxony.
