Asturias - the natural landscape of northern Spain
The northern province of Asturia is one of the most beautiful corners of Spain. Start your journey from Cangas de Onis and explore the surrounding mountains and villages. There is nowhere else quite so beautiful compared to the colors and smell of this region.
The prize of this journey is to get up to the town of Bulnes - a town with no road access at all but a funicular that was built a few years ago. So park your car at the funicular station, take the funicular (last train leaves at 6pm) or walk the 4km uphill. See if you can meet all 32 residents of this town.
Cangas de Onis is a bit in the middle of nowhere: 2.5-hour by car from Bilbao (passing through Santander!) or roughly 4 hours from Santiago de Compostela. Break up your trip from either Bilbao or Santiago with stops inbetween: the trip is really worth the time. Once you are at Cangas de Onis, set your GPS to Panes as destination and you will be driving through these beautiful mountains.
If you have time, you can visit the cave paintings at Tito Bustillo. It's less than 30 minutes' drive from Cangas de Onis up to the coastal town of Ribadesella. The exhibition is very interesting.
