Mikulov Castle, South Moravia, Czech Republic

Determined to see true colors of this beautiful country, I took an extensive driving tour around the Czech Republic, particularly in the southern region called South Moravia.  Mikulov is an incredibly beautiful town in South Moravia at the border with Austria and Slovakia that warrants a stopover for anyone who likes castles, small towns, long strolls and wine.  I arrived at the end of a snowy winter, and the whole place looked right out of a fairytale picture book.

The castle began its construction in the 13th century and had undergone numerous reconstructions and restorations.  Wines from this region are also quite well-known, especially the white varieties.  In this region, you will find countless Vinotek (wine bars), which serve wine by glass (and of course by bottle) along with light snacks.  Wines are slightly on the sweet side, but go very well with local meat dishes.

Mikulov is not far from Brno. It's best approached from the D2 highway that connects Brno and Bratislava. Getting from Vienna might be tricky but equally doable.  It is about 45 minutes' drive from Brno.
